Security is a key element in the development of Wi-Fi technology which is based on radio transmissions.
France Telecom has implemented security solutions which enable only authorized users to access Intranets and company networks and guarantee the confidentiality of data exchanged, especially at hotspots.

Security is based on 3 mechanisms :

When you connect, we guarantee the confidentiality of your login details :

Orange wifi access assures secure authentication via an SLL (Secure Sockets Layers) secure webpage.

SSL security with 128bits coding, as used by all the banking sites, means that the confidentiality of your login details is guaranteed, as they go no further than the Orange network.

Orange wifi access hot tip : As SSL is transparent for users (ie. you can use it without realizing), we suggest that you systematically check the bottom right-hand corner of your browser window for the locked padlock icon :

Similarly, if you buy Orange Wi-Fi passes from Orange wifi access hotspots by credit card, your bankcard number will be systematically encrypted by SSL, and will not be kept in the site sales history.

This is additional protection from Orange. It means that you will need to re-enter your card details at each on-line purchase.

Orange wifi access protects your computer from all local attacks :

Orange forbids inter-device communications at all of its hotspots, thereby protecting you from any possible "local" attacks which computer hackers find relatively easy to launch.

Connecting at an Orange hotspot no longer presents any greater risk than a classic wired Internet connection.

Orange wifi access hot tip :
as is the case for all Internet connections, we recommend that you install a personal Firewall in order to protect your computer from any attacks stemming from Internet.

Security when you need it :

Orange wifi access offers a total set of guarantee of compatibility with your company's data security system.

WEP coding (Wired Equivalent Privacy), which is widely used, assures security of private Wi-Fi connections. As it uses a so-called static encryption key, it cannot be used at hotspots as it would mean giving the key to all customers, thereby cancelling out any notion of security. Developments such as 802.1x partnered with WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) will lead to solutions to these issues and norms for them are currently being drawn up. Once ready, they will be deployed on the Orange hotspot network.

In the meantime, Orange wifi access meets your need for security by being entirely compatible with all professional network security solutions (VPN, IPSEC…). Our network has been designed to avoid translating any addresses (or NAT: Network Address Translation), thereby guaranteeing optimal operations for all existing VPN IPSEC customers. This is made possible through the exclusive use of public IP addresses, among other techniques.

Orange wifi access hot tips :
To access your Intranet, we suggest you use VPN solutions, as they alone can assure total protection from your computer to your company network, no matter which network is being used (Wi-Fi, Internet…). Contact your company's IT or telecom manager, or your France Telecom representative to find out more.
