Wi-Fi Mesh, a new technology for wireless access to broadband Internet in towns and cities and outdoors.

The city of Issy les Moulineaux and Orange, in collaboration with Strix Systems, proposes wireless access to Internet in the heart of the city and outdoors, thanks to a new technology: Wi-Fi mesh.

In fact, since September 30, 2007, inhabitants of Issy, as well as visitors to the city, have had the possibility of Wi-Fi broadband connection from café terraces, bus stops, public benches, etc., using a portable computer, a PDA, a games console, a tablet PC or even a bi-mode telephone (GSM/Wi-Fi).

What is Wi-Fi Mesh?

Mesh technology (known as “Maillé” in French) is a recent technology that still hasn’t reached maturity in Europe. Using a mesh of spots, it enables cover for wider zones. This solution is an alternative and/or supplement to classic Wi-Fi, which we are installing in public places (Accor hotels, AirFrance lounges, convention centres, etc.).

Orange has set up a sufficient number of access points to ensure a quality service for the inhabitants of Issy les Moulineaux and will extend its cover to satisfy a maximum number of users.

What does this mean for the city of Issy Les Moulineaux?

Several antennae have been installed in identified neighbourhood zones, creating a “spider’s web” that constantly covers the city, even if one of them breaks down.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

- One of the main advantages is the creation of the Wi-Fi Hotzone !
The Issy-les-Moulineaux Wi-Fi Hotzone is one of the 30,000 Orange hotspots available in France, with users being able to surf the web, consult their messaging services or watch live TV.

- Thanks to Wi-Fi mesh, subscribers equipped with a Wi-Fi terminal can connect in Wi-Fi in public spaces outdoors !
In addition, Wi-Fi mesh and unik mean users can enjoy unlimited Wi-Fi calls. The Wi-Fi mesh network rolled out by Orange in the city of Issy-les-Moulineaux offers many advantages to bi-mode terminal users (GSM/Wi-Fi) :

• Fixed-mobile convergence
• Unlimited calls 24/7 to Orange mobiles and landlines for all calls initiated under Wi-Fi cover with the unik option
• All calls initiated under Wi-Fi are free and unlimited with the unik option, even if they then switch over to GSM
• Since June 2007, unik customers have enjoyed the possibility of unlimited calls from all of Orange’s Wi-Fi access hotspots in France.
